Talks
Here are some videos and recordings of talks I’ve given on my research.
Information Metrics and Statistical Inference
- Information Metrics and Probabilistic Inference: audio (right click, Save As, and open with RealPlayer or QuickTime), and slides from the talk.
HIV Evolution:
- Mapping evolutionary pathways of HIV-1 drug resistance using conditional selection pressure: short talk at IMA workshop “Organization of Biological Networks” (slides in PDF format)
- Longer version of this talk: UC Riverside, May 14, 2007
Genome Evolution:
- Massive Expansion of Dscam Splicing Diversity via Staggered Homologous Recombination: an in-depth analysis of how the Dscam gene constructed large cassettes of duplicated exons during arthropod evolution, based on 20 insect and arthropod genome sequences. Talk given at the Alternative Splicing SIG, ISMB 2009, Stockholm, June 2009.
- Measuring biological functions using comparative genomics: a novel approach for measuring RNA selection pressure using phylogenetic trees of multiple aligned genomes. Talk given at CASB20, UC San Diego, March 2009.
Bioinformatics:
- Tutorial on Pygr and Worldbase for comparative genomics and easy access / sharing of complex, large-scale datasets: Talk given at UCLA-DOE Lab 10/19/09.
- Exploring the future of bioinformatics data sharing and mining with Pygr and Worldbase: talk given to a scientific computing audience at SciPy 2009, Caltech, Aug. 2009. This talk focuses almost entirely on Worldbase, and emphasizes CS aspects more than the DAM-SIG talk below, shows real code examples etc.
- Exploring the future of bioinformatics data sharing and mining with Pygr and Worldbase: talk given to a bioinformatics audience at the Data Analysis and Management SIG, ISMB 2009, Stockholm, June 2009.
- Foundations of Bioinformatics Education: A plea for emphasizing statistical inference in undergraduate bioinformatics education. Presented at the RECOMB-BE 2009 conference, San Diego CA, March 2009
- Bioinformatics as a Queryable Knowledge Map: the Pygr Project: short talk at UCLA Bioinformatics IDP Feb. 2009 Retreat (slides in PDF format)
- High Throughput Tools for Deep Sequencing Analysis and Comparative Genomics of Alternative Splicing: Detection of alternative splicing using deep sequencing analysis, and bioinformatics tools for alternative splicing data analysis. Presented at the Alternative Splicing meeting in Valencia, Spain, Feb. 2009.
- Graph representations and analysis in bioinformatics: seminar in the UCLA Dept. of Computer Science
